Labels, and Labels

Some people really like labels. In fact, they like them way too much. They like to categorize people, to put them in neat boxes, so that they can tell what a person is like, by their label.

Some of these kind people, we call racist, sexist, homophobic, or just plain stupid.

Other people don’t like labels, but still use them when pressed.

Some people don’t like labels at all, and will get angry if you try to label them.

I don’t know what to do about the first kind of person – they have problems. The third kind are usually okay, if a bit strange, but the second kind is rather interesting. The linked author said, that she didn’t like labels, but if she had to decide, she would say that she was a woman first, and then Latina.

This seems reasonable.

Now, let’s think about some other kinds of labels. Some people label by religion, some by politics, some by occupation, some by sexual orientation, etc., etc. Again, this seems quite familiar.

But there is a difference between some kinds of labels, and other kinds of labels.
