Bailout Failure

September 29th, 2008 by Brianna

So, the bailout plan got voted down.

I’m actually quite happy with this result. The plan, while improved over the initial version, was still stupid and pointless. As long as we’re going to try and run a capitalistic economy, we need to let bankrupt businesses go, well, bankrupt!

But what about the people affected, and all the lost jobs?

Help them directly. It would be many times more efficient than trying to keep failing businesses afloat.

Besides, the US has ruled the world for too long. We need a letdown to keep things fair.

I want to write more about this, but I’m too tired. More tomorrow.

Update: The Woman Rebel has some great reasons as to why the bailout plan was bad.

Sunday Internet Crushing: Joanna Rutkowska

September 29th, 2008 by Brianna

(I borrowed this idea from Dorothy Surrenders, who has weekend crushes on famous, smart, and/or beautiful women. I, instead, tend to crush on bloggers, and women on the Internet in general!)

This Sunday, my crush is on Joanna Rutkowska, of invisiblethings.org.

Rutkowska is a computer security researcher. Basically, she tries to find ways to break into computers and compromise their security, so that the problems that allowed the break-in can be fixed. She specializes in virtualization exploits.

Her main claim to fame the so-called ‘blue pill’. The blue pill is a small program that takes advantage of the hardware virtualization capabilities in AMD cpus, and causes the operating system to be run inside the blue pill (sort of like the Matrix, get it?), all without the operating system being able to easily stop or detect it. The publication and development of this concept caused a media storm, as it essentially exposed a design flaw in lots and lots of hardware!

I could go on and on about all the amazing things that she’s created and discovered, but as most (non-computer geek!) people would probably get rather confused and/or bored, let me just say:

Joanna Rutkowska = smart, cool, & generally awesome!

The Music Genre Diagram – Now in progress

September 27th, 2008 by Brianna

I’m going to make a music genre chart. Maybe I’ll even make it interactive someday. Look for it in the menu bar. Here’s why I’m doing it.

I’ve spent a lot of time on allmusic lately, reading about bands, trying to find new music, etc. It’s a pretty good site, if the reviews are only of variable quality (the editors subscribe to the ‘popularity is directly proportional to quality’ school of reviewing’) The information seems very accurate, and the sheer amount of material included is quite overwhelming.

So, if anybody should know about music genres, what they are, and what define them, it should be allmusic, right?

Not so much.

Their rock genre page alone has some 300 genres listed. The other broad genre pages aren’t quite so bad – and the classical page is sadly deficient – but my overall impression has been “big mess”.

So why do I even care, you ask?

Labels, and Labels

September 26th, 2008 by Brianna

Some people really like labels. In fact, they like them way too much. They like to categorize people, to put them in neat boxes, so that they can tell what a person is like, by their label.

Some of these kind people, we call racist, sexist, homophobic, or just plain stupid.

Other people don’t like labels, but still use them when pressed.

Some people don’t like labels at all, and will get angry if you try to label them.

I don’t know what to do about the first kind of person – they have problems. The third kind are usually okay, if a bit strange, but the second kind is rather interesting. The linked author said, that she didn’t like labels, but if she had to decide, she would say that she was a woman first, and then Latina.

This seems reasonable.

Now, let’s think about some other kinds of labels. Some people label by religion, some by politics, some by occupation, some by sexual orientation, etc., etc. Again, this seems quite familiar.

But there is a difference between some kinds of labels, and other kinds of labels.

Linky, Linky, Lucy Lawless, L Word

September 25th, 2008 by Brianna

So, I was going to write a long rant on labels and individualism, but it’s getting late, soooo…

I’m sure that anybody who cares will have seen this, but Lucy Lawless is going to be on the L Word!

It’s going to be so cool. (How can it not be?)

And once there, you MUST click the ‘here for more messages‘ link. It’s absolutely the funniest thing I’ve read in a month.

That’s all.

Sick of Sarah

September 24th, 2008 by Brianna

For the last week or so, afterellen.com has been pushing a band called Sick of Sarah. I found the theme on Brunch with Bridget to be quite catchy, but I didn’t really like any of their other songs.

Then I saw the ‘Daisies’ video, and I thought I’d give them another shot. The last day or so, they’ve really been growing on me. I’m not really sure why – but I think it’s the melodies. The songs are clever, but not genius, the instrumentals are just average, but the melodies are interesting.

The constant use of triplets is unusual for pop music, and the occasional meter changes combined with the sharpness and snappiness of the lead singer’s voice create a kind of ‘off balance’ effect that forces you to listen.

Or something like that. I’ll review the album after I listen to it a few more times.

Sunday Internet Crushing: This Girl Called Automatic Win

September 22nd, 2008 by Brianna

(I borrowed this idea from Dorothy Surrenders, who has weekend crushes on famous, smart, and/or beautiful women. I, instead, will crush on bloggers, and women on the Internet in general!)

For today, my crush is on Riese, of This Girl Called Automatic Win.

Or IS she ‘the girl called automatic win’, herself? I can’t figure the title out. Is it a sentence? (“This girl called. – automatic win!”) But if that’s it, what’s she winning? Or, is it a reference to masturbation? Or all three at once? Or something else?

Really, I’m not sure I want to know. That’s the thing about Riese – she’s created her own slang, her own vocabulary, her own world - and it’s a place of wonder and beauty and unicorns and raging depression. It’s awesome because it’s weird.

I found Auto-Win by randomly clicking on someone’s blog-roll. My reaction was something along the lines of, “What the Hell is this??!!” It was strange. It had no apparent point. It was rather self-involved. For the longest time, I couldn’t figure out what ‘probs’, and ‘totes’, and ‘JK’ meant (I’m rather dense… and don’t text…) Riese rambled on and on and on and on and on. I never like crazy, in-concise, semi-pointless writing.

And yet, it was Still. Awesome.

Dear Riese:

I tried not to read your blog, I really did. I kept telling myself to delete it from my RSS reader. Reading your blog made me feel uncomfortable, even sick. I thought you might be completely insane. I felt sorry for you.

But I couldn’t help myself. I kept reading. Soon, I began to understand your writing, your world, your use of the word ‘auto’. I realized that your writing was amazing, wonderful, insightful.

And I watched your vlogs, which scared me even more, but I came to appreciate them too, and now…

I think that I get you. I think I get how your brain works. And I like it.

You still creep me out, sometimes, Riese – but I love you anyway!

Whedon and Feminism

September 18th, 2008 by Brianna

I’ve been thinking about making a “Buffy Episode Guide” type of section – sort of like the Xena guide at Whoosh! – with commentary and other information. So, to perhaps start things moving that way, here’s a little something about feminism in the buffy/firefly-verse.

With inspiration from The Hathor Legacy.

Semi-Critical Reviews: Norah Vincent – Self-Made Man

September 15th, 2008 by Brianna

I recently read Self-Made Man on the recommendation of xkcd. I wanted to love this book, I really did. Black Like Me is one of the most amazing books I have ever read, and I guess I somehow hoped that this would be a sort of Male Like Me, if you will.

My expectations were rather too high, I’m afraid. It’s not even close. I still liked the book – it was certainly worth reading – but it just didn’t blow me away.

Semi-Critical Reviews: Sleater-Kinney – Sleater-Kinney

September 14th, 2008 by Brianna

So, I really want to talk about Sleater-Kinney, the <fangirl>AWESOMEIST BAND EVAR!!!!</fangirl>

Ahem.

I intend to review the albums in order. Today: their first album, self-titled Sleater-Kinney.

This album was actually the last one I purchased, so I tend to view it in light of the other albums. In comparison to the later albums, one is struck by how much of a riotgrrrl sound Sleater-Kinney has. It is very clean, high quality riotgirrl, to be sure, and it definitely has the SK sound, but the riotgrrrl roots are extremely obvious.
